Chevrolet Bolt EV / EUV
charging guide

The Bolt is the value champion of US EVs. It is cheap to buy and run, but its 55 kW DC peak and 7.2 kW AC charger set clear limits.

Charging at home

The Bolt maxes out at 7.2 kW, or 32 amps at 240 volts. That adds about 26 miles per hour — a full overnight charge from empty takes roughly ten hours. Buying a 48-amp charger gains you nothing.

Recommended circuit: 32 A at 240 V for the full 7.2 kW. A 32 A circuit is the practical minimum; anything above the car's onboard limit buys no speed.

How long does it take?

These estimates assume a 10–90% charge, 240 V AC and 90% efficiency. Cold weather, a cold battery or a shared circuit will slow things down.

CircuitPowerRange added10–90% time
32 A7.2 kW26 mi/hr8h 1m
40 A7.2 kW (car limit)26 mi/hr8h 1m
48 A7.2 kW (car limit)26 mi/hr8h 1m

Estimates use the car's 7.2 kW onboard charger. If your trim has a smaller unit, the 32 A row is the practical ceiling. Want your own numbers? Use the charging time calculator.

Can you use a Tesla Supercharger?

GM has Supercharger access, and the Bolt needs GM's NACS-to-CCS1 adapter. Even then, the car's 55 kW DC peak means a 10–80% stop takes about 50 minutes. It is a city car, not a road-trip car.

What this car is best for

Best for budget-focused commuters who charge at home and rarely fast-charge.

Watch out: Do not buy a 48-amp charger for a Bolt. The car cannot accept more than 32 amps, so the extra cost buys zero speed.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Chevy Bolt use a Tesla Supercharger?+

Yes, with GM's official NACS-to-CCS1 adapter. The car's DC charging is limited to about 55 kW, so stops are slow compared with newer EVs.

What is the best home charger for a Bolt?+

A 32-amp J1772 unit such as the Grizzl-E Classic is plenty. The Bolt's onboard charger cannot use more than 7.2 kW.
