Rivian R1S
charging guide

The R1S is a 400-mile, three-row SUV with serious off-road hardware. Its huge battery makes 48-amp home charging the sensible minimum.

Charging at home

A 48-amp circuit adds about 28 miles per hour. On a 135 kWh pack, a 32-amp circuit adds only about 19 miles per hour, so the bigger circuit is worth it if your panel can take it. 2025 and newer NACS trucks need a J1772-to-NACS adapter to use the Rivian Wall Charger, or a native NACS wall unit.

Model-year note: this guide covers both port generations. If your car has the newer NACS port, a J1772 home charger needs a J1772-to-NACS adapter; a native NACS charger is the cleaner choice.
Recommended circuit: 48 A at 240 V for the full 11.5 kW. A 32 A circuit is the practical minimum; anything above the car's onboard limit buys no speed.

How long does it take?

These estimates assume a 10–90% charge, 240 V AC and 90% efficiency. Cold weather, a cold battery or a shared circuit will slow things down.

40 A9.6 kW23 mi/hr12h 30m

Estimates use the car's 11.5 kW onboard charger. If your trim has a smaller unit, the 32 A row is the practical ceiling. Want your own numbers? Use the charging time calculator.

Can you use a Tesla Supercharger?

Rivian has Supercharger access. 2022–2024 R1S cars need Rivian's NACS-to-CCS1 adapter; 2025 and newer cars have a native NACS port. Peak DC power is about 220 kW.

What this car is best for

Best for families who need three rows, real off-road ability, and long range.

Watch out: The R1S is heavy and not especially efficient. Expect higher electricity use than a Model Y, especially with all-terrain tires.

Frequently asked questions

Does the R1S have a NACS port?+

2025 and newer R1S vehicles have a native NACS port. Earlier cars use J1772/CCS1 and need Rivian's adapter for Tesla Superchargers.

Can I charge an R1S on a 32-amp circuit?+

Yes, but it adds only about 19 miles per hour. For a 135 kWh pack, 48 amps is a much better fit if your electrical panel allows it.
