Tesla Model Y
charging guide

The Model Y is the simplest EV to charge in America: a native NACS port, access to every Tesla Supercharger, and 11.5 kW of AC charging at home.

Charging at home

A 48-amp circuit gives the Model Y its full 11.5 kW, adding roughly 36 miles of range per hour. If your panel cannot support 48 amps, a 32-amp setup still adds about 24 miles per hour overnight — enough for most drivers.

Recommended circuit: 48 A at 240 V for the full 11.5 kW. A 32 A circuit is the practical minimum; anything above the car's onboard limit buys no speed.

How long does it take?

These estimates assume a 10–90% charge, 240 V AC and 90% efficiency. Cold weather, a cold battery or a shared circuit will slow things down.

CircuitPowerRange added10–90% time
32 A7.68 kW24 mi/hr8h 41m
40 A9.6 kW30 mi/hr6h 57m
48 A11.5 kW36 mi/hr5h 48m

Estimates use the car's 11.5 kW onboard charger. If your trim has a smaller unit, the 32 A row is the practical ceiling. Want your own numbers? Use the charging time calculator.

Can you use a Tesla Supercharger?

Every Model Y can plug directly into Tesla Superchargers with no adapter. Peak power is 250 kW, and Tesla's navigation preconditions the battery automatically when you route to a station.

What this car is best for

Best all-rounder if you want the widest fast-charging network and the least adapter hassle.

Watch out: The Model Y accepts up to 11.5 kW on AC, not 19.2 kW. Do not buy an 80-amp charger expecting faster home charging.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Tesla Model Y use a J1772 charger?+

Yes. Tesla includes a J1772 adapter with the car, so you can use public J1772 stations and most third-party home chargers. For a permanent home setup, a J1772 wall unit plus the adapter works, but a NACS unit is cleaner.

How long does a Model Y take to charge at home?+

At 48 amps and 240 volts, a Long Range Model Y goes from 10% to 90% in roughly six and a half hours. At 32 amps, plan for about nine and a half hours.
